It was Emmett Guthrie, the big, shy librarian who always says no charge. The new system gives him away the week of her mother's wedding, and when she covers for him, he asks for one thing back: to be her date on Ocracoke.

Rae Willis brings back five overdue books in the rain, ready to pay for once, and Emmett says what he always says. Then his boss calls about the new system.
Rae has seen the app, and she wants to pay every cent this morning. Instead she lies for Emmett in front of his boss, and by closing he has asked for a date and she has asked for a dance lesson.
On the ferry to her mother's wedding, Rae tells Emmett why she never owes anybody, and he tells her what he has never told anyone. The inn has one room, and he takes the armchair.
Emmett dances in front of a whole island and lets Rae see all of him with the lamp on. In the morning there is an envelope in his jacket pocket.
The town wants to know who waived twenty seven fines, and Emmett means to tell them himself. Rae got to town hall first.
